Introduction- A little about me
I have been breeding chihuahuas(off and on), for close to 50 years, and I still would not say I have ever learned all there is to learn, about this very intelligent, tiny breed. They are the smallest of all the AKC breeds, and are in the toy breed group.
My love of chihuahuas began many, many years ago. I went with my father, at about 12 years of age, to take a mare he had to a stallion to be bred. I was sent inside the home, and there were the cutest tiny little red chihuahua babies, with two very red parents. They were extremely small, and I was informed they were Mexican chihuahuas. From that point on, I had a dream of owning one of these tiny babies, one day. That dream came true, with my first long coat chihuahua, named Chico. I have to say, when I purchased him, I had zero intention of raising chihuahuas. But, after having him a while, and showing him to his AKC CD title in obedience, I then wanted others to see how smart and intelligent, these little dogs really were. His last of 3 legs in obedience, he finished 1st out of 44 dogs(none being chihuahuas) and the obedience judge, told me how smart my little dog was.
Since that time at the Greater St. Louis, MO show, I have been told countless times how intelligent these little ones, I have sold to many, many families, really are. I continue to breed for conformation, intelligence, and soundness in this breed. I do encourage everyone to research the breed, before deciding if they wish to own one of them. They are very dependent on your protection from many types of predators(including some breeds of dogs, among the other wild animals, etc). They also need some climate control(probably not under 50 degrees for long, or over 90 degrees for long periods).
The Chihuahua also needs to have their teeth checked or cleaned fairly regularly(a vet to look at them, once a year or so), or you could risk infection to the rest of their tiny body, which can ultimately lead to other health problems, and a shortened life span. Typically this breed can live from 15-18 years or so, with good health care.
Please do watch the extra flea & tick meds that are often recommended by the vets, though. Not saying they don't need anything, to keep these insects off of them, but often times, the type or amount given, can be detrimental to your little one. Please do some of your own research, as to vaccinations, and preventatives, and try to come up with as safe as possible solution to your situation, as you can. I DO NOT advise the leptospirosis vaccination, and I would hope your vet would honor this knowledge I have gained, through the years, as that vaccine can be very dangerous to the chihuahua.
If you still feel compelled to have one of these little dogs, then please fill out an adoption form, if I have a puppy available, that you might be interested in acquiring.
Thank you,
